The best time to buy a furnace in Ontario

The best time to replace a furnace in Ontario is spring (April to early June) or early fall (September to mid-October), when installers have openings and you have time to compare quotes. The equipment costs about the same all year. What you avoid by planning is a rushed decision in a cold house.

The furnace-buying calendar

Heating and cooling companies in Ontario run two rushes a year: no-heat calls from the first cold snap through February, and no-cooling calls in summer heat waves. Between them sit two shoulder seasons when planned installs fit easily into the schedule.

Installer demand through a typical Ontario yearA planning pattern, not measured data. Cold snaps and heat waves move it every year.
  1. January: heating peak
  2. February: heating peak
  3. March: heating demand easing
  4. April: best window
  5. May: best window
  6. June: good early in the month, then cooling demand builds
  7. July: cooling peak
  8. August: cooling peak
  9. September: best window
  10. October: good until the first cold snap
  11. November: heating demand rising

Why the shoulder seasons work better

Typical Ontario furnace prices do not drop in April. What changes is everything around the price:

  • Time to compare. With a working furnace you can read two or three written quotes side by side. In January, the first company through the door often gets the job.
  • Choice of equipment. A planned install lets you pick the type and model you want. An emergency install often means whatever is in stock.
  • Scheduling. Installers fit planned jobs around no-heat calls, so in spring and early fall you can usually pick the day.
  • A mild day for the swap. A straightforward replacement usually takes most of a day with the heat off: easy in May, uncomfortable at -20°C.

What changes with the season, and what does not

The equipment is priced by manufacturers and distributors, and those prices do not swing with the weather. When they change, it tends to be a general increase that applies all year. Labour and installation scope are priced by the job, not the month. So the same furnace, installed the same way, costs about the same in July as in January.

  1. Emergency replacement

    Raises the price: Less choice

The bigger cost of an emergency is usually lost choice, not a surcharge: no time to compare quotes, a model picked from stock, and pressure to say yes. After-hours and weekend service calls often cost more for repairs.

  2. Planned shoulder-season install

    Lowers the price: Easier scheduling

Flexible dates and time to compare put you in a better position to negotiate the scope and price.

  3. Manufacturer or dealer promotion

    Lowers the price: Varies

Promotions, instant rebates and financing offers appear at different times of year. They exist, but they are not predictable enough to plan a failing furnace around.

  4. Waiting for a sale

Can go either way: Either way

Waiting works on a healthy furnace. On a failing one, a breakdown in January can wipe out any discount.

When a quote includes a promotion, ask for its name, its end date and whether it appears as a separate line. A real promotion survives that question. For what drives the price itself, see furnace installation cost.

Plan the replacement before the failure

The best way to buy in a shoulder season is to know a replacement is coming. Once a gas furnace passes about 15 years, or repairs start to stack up, start planning instead of waiting for the breakdown. Our guide to how long furnaces last covers the warning signs.

Repair or replace: typical Ontario prices on one scale, before HST
  • Annual furnace tune-upCatches problems early$120 to $250
  • Control board repair$500 to $1,100
  • Inducer motor repair$600 to $1,200
  • Single-stage furnace, installedReplacement$4,000 to $6,500

A large repair on an old furnace is often the moment to replace, and a cracked heat exchanger is usually replacement-level. If you are weighing a specific repair quote, the repair or replace calculator walks through it. To turn your situation into a timeline, use the planner below.

Best time to install

Spring or early fall

April to early June, or September to mid-October.

  1. Collect two or three written quotes for the same scope.
  2. Have the furnace checked so it can carry you to the install date.
  3. Book the install for the next shoulder season.

Typical installed price, any season

$4,000 to $6,500

A season-by-season plan

What to do in each season (guidance, not data)
SeasonInstaller demandWhat it means for youWhat to do
Winter (December to February)Highest for heatingNo-heat calls come first. Planned installs wait for openings, and you have the least time to compare.Keep an old furnace maintained. Repair if safe; replace now only if you must.
Late winter (March)EasingA good time to gather quotes and book a spring date.Get two or three quotes. For a heat pump, apply for pre-approval now.
Spring (April to early June)LowFlexible dates, time to compare, and mild weather for the swap.Install.
Summer (mid-June to August)High for coolingFurnace jobs compete with AC calls, especially during heat waves.Gather fall quotes in August. A combined furnace and AC job fits well if booked early.
Early fall (September to mid-October)Low, then risingThe second window. It closes quickly once nights turn cold.Install before the first cold snap. Book tune-ups.
Late fall (late October to November)RisingThe first cold snaps bring a wave of no-heat calls and tune-ups.Fix small problems now rather than in January.

The window closes earlier in Ottawa and central Ontario, where heating season starts sooner, and later in the southwest.

If a heat pump is on the table, start a season earlier

A heat pump or dual fuel system adds steps a furnace swap does not have: an electrical check, sizing for heating, and, if you want a Home Renovation Savings rebate, approval before installation. When we checked the program pages on October 4, 2026, pre-installation approval was mandatory, and a standalone gas furnace is not a heat pump rebate measure. Start in late winter for a spring install, or in summer for a fall one. Programs change, so confirm the current rules before you buy; our Ontario HVAC rebates guide explains what is available and the heat pump buying guide covers the rest.

If your furnace fails in January

Gas smell or carbon monoxide alarm?

Leave the house right away, then contact your gas utility’s emergency line or 911 from outside. Do not switch lights or appliances on or off on the way out.

  1. Check the simple things first

Thermostat mode and batteries, the furnace power switch and breaker, a clogged filter, and on a high-efficiency furnace, snow or ice blocking the exterior vent pipes.

  2. Get a diagnosis

A service call is typically $100 to $200. Ask whether a safe repair can carry you to spring, when you could replace on your own schedule.

  3. If it must be replaced, still compare

Ask for written quotes from two companies. Even in a cold snap, a second quote within a day or two is usually possible.

  4. Ask about temporary heat

Some installers can provide electric heaters while you wait. Run space heaters on their own outlets, away from anything that burns, and never heat with a gas oven or barbecue.

  5. Protect the pipes

Open sink cabinets on outside walls and let a tap drip in deep cold until the heat is back.

  6. Do not sign under pressure

A rental or financing contract pushed on you in an emergency deserves the same reading as any other. See renting vs buying a furnace.

Gas work in Ontario must be done by a TSSA-registered contractor; ask for the registration number. For what typical repairs cost while you decide, see furnace repair costs. When you request a quote below, choose the urgent timeline so the booking team knows you have no heat.

Questions people ask

Are furnaces cheaper in the summer?

The equipment rarely is. Furnace prices do not follow the weather, so the same furnace and scope cost about the same in July as in January. What spring, summer and early fall give you is time: installers have openings, you can compare two or three quotes, and you can choose the model rather than taking whatever is in stock.

Should I wait for a furnace sale or promotion?

Only if your furnace is working well. Manufacturer and dealer promotions do appear at different times of year, but you cannot plan around them reliably, and a breakdown in January costs you choice, comfort and time to compare. If a quote includes a promotion, ask for its name, its end date and its value shown as a separate line.

Can a furnace be installed in the middle of winter?

Yes. Winter installs are routine, and a straightforward swap usually takes most of a day, so the house is without heat for several hours. Installers put no-heat jobs first, so a planned winter replacement may be scheduled around them. Have space heaters ready, protect pipes on outside walls, and ask how the crew keeps the house warm during the swap.

How far ahead should I plan a heat pump instead of a furnace?

Start a season early. A heat pump needs more decisions than a furnace swap: an electrical check, sizing for heating, and, if you want a Home Renovation Savings rebate, approval before installation. For a spring install, gather quotes and apply in late winter; for a fall install, start in summer. Confirm the current program rules before you buy.
