Furnace and HVAC brands, by price
Brand changes a furnace quote less than most people expect. At the same tier, value and premium brands usually sit a thousand dollars or so apart, while sizing, venting and the installer decide more of the price and most of the result.
Brand price comparison: a mid-tier furnace
One tier for every brand, so you compare like with like: a two-stage, 96% AFUE furnace with an ECM blower in a detached Ontario home, priced inside the two-stage range on the Ontario Furnace Prices price index.

Brand matters less than the install
Every new gas furnace sold in Canada must reach at least 95% AFUE, so efficiency differs between brands by a point or two. What separates two quotes is mostly the tier (single-stage, two-stage or modulating), the dealer's pricing and the work around the box: venting, ductwork, gas line and permit. Our furnace price guide shows the full range for each tier.
Brand families: who makes what
Several names on Ontario quotes share a parent company, engineering and parts.
- Trane and American Standard
- Sister brands with closely related equipment; like for like, they differ mostly in dealer pricing and warranty terms.
- Carrier, Bryant and Payne
- Related brands from one corporate family, sold through different dealer networks.
- Daikin, Goodman and Amana
- Daikin owns Goodman, which also builds Amana-brand heating and cooling equipment. Goodman is the value line.
- Rheem and Ruud
- Sister brands from the same manufacturer.
- Lennox
- Sold through its own network of independent dealers.
- York
- We do not list a parent company. The company named on the warranty certificate is the one that stands behind your furnace.

Using brand prices when you compare quotes
- Compare quotes at the same tier first, then compare brands.
- Ask for the full model number on every quote so you can check staging, blower and warranty yourself.
- Ask who stocks parts for the brand locally, and how fast they arrive in January.
- Read the current warranty certificate and register the equipment if required.

Questions people ask
Which furnace brand is the most reliable?
No independent, public source tracks furnace failure rates by brand across Canadian homes, so any ranking you see is opinion or a small survey. Many early failures trace back to sizing, venting, gas pressure or airflow set at installation. Choose a tier and warranty you are comfortable with, then the installer you trust most.
Are sister brands like Trane and American Standard the same furnace?
They share a parent company and closely related designs and parts, so a like-for-like pair usually performs alike. Cabinets, controls, warranty terms and dealer networks can differ, and that is where most of the price gap comes from. Compare full model numbers and warranty certificates side by side.
Why does every contractor recommend a different brand?
Most contractors buy through one or two distributors and carry the brands those distributors stock. They know those parts and warranty claims well, which is a fair reason to prefer them. A recommendation reflects their supply chain as much as the equipment, so ask why that brand and tier suit your home.
