How to read the index
Each bar runs from the low to the high end of the range, and the dark tick marks the midpoint: a sensible anchor when you first read a quote. Geothermal starts above the $20,000 end of the scale, so its range is printed beside the axis.
Ranges come from publicly posted Ontario contractor pricing and manufacturer and distributor list-price guidance. Only a written quote from an installer who has seen your home is a firm number.
What moves your number
-
Venting or chimney liner
Raises the price: +$300 to $1,500
Needed when the vent route changes, or when a gas water heater is left alone in an old chimney.
-
Ductwork changes
Raises the price: +$500 to $3,000+
Undersized returns, leaky runs or adding air conditioning to a heat-only house.
-
Staging and efficiency
Raises the price: +$3,000 to $4,500
Single-stage to modulating, comparing the low ends and the high ends of the two ranges.
-
Season and urgency
Can go either way: Either way
A January no-heat call leaves little room to compare. Spring and early fall leave time for two or three quotes.
A range is a starting point. A free in-home estimate prices your house.

Questions about heating and cooling prices in Ontario
How much does a furnace, AC or heat pump cost in Ontario?
Typical installed prices in 2026, before 13% HST: a standard gas furnace $4,000 to $6,500, a standard central air conditioner $3,800 to $7,000 and a ducted cold-climate heat pump $9,000 to $18,000. Replacing a furnace and AC together typically costs $8,000 to $15,000. Each guide breaks its range down by type: furnace prices in Ontario, central air prices and heat pump prices.
Are your prices before or after HST?
Before. Every price on this site excludes the 13% HST unless it says otherwise. Multiply by 1.13 for the after-tax figure: a $5,000 installation comes to $5,650. Ask each installer whether the quote includes HST, the permit and removal of the old unit.
Should I rent or buy a furnace in Ontario?
Buying usually costs less over the life of the furnace. Ontario rentals typically run $40 to $80 a month on 10 to 15 year terms, so payments can exceed the installed price, and ending early triggers a buyout. Read the buyout schedule before you sign. See rent or buy a furnace.
Is a heat pump worth it in Ontario?
Often, if you need new air conditioning anyway or heat with electricity, oil or propane. A ducted cold-climate heat pump typically costs $9,000 to $18,000 installed. On natural gas, a heat pump usually costs somewhat more to run than a new 96% furnace at current rates, so dual fuel is a common middle path. Rebates through Home Renovation Savings need approval before installation, and programs change, so confirm first. See heat pump prices.
Who contacts me after I request a quote?
Our booking team, shortly after you submit, to confirm a few details and book a free in-home estimate with a participating local heating and cooling company that serves your area. If no participating company serves your area yet, the booking team will let you know. The call may be automated or AI-assisted, and you can opt out at any time.
Is the quote really free?
Yes. The request and the in-home estimate cost you nothing, and there is no obligation to buy. If the written quote looks high, ask what it includes: venting, ductwork, the permit and the labour warranty are the usual reasons a price moves.
