Furnace prices in Cambridge
Cambridge homeowners typically pay $4,000 to $6,500 for a single-stage gas furnace and $9,000 to $18,000 for a ducted heat pump, before HST. In the older parts of Galt, Preston and Hespeler, venting and chimney work is what pushes a quote higher.
Cambridge grew from the towns of Galt, Preston and Hespeler, joined in 1973, and the price of a new furnace still follows that history. The base ranges match the provincial figures on Ontario Furnace Prices; the extras depend on what installers tend to find in each part of the city, so start there.

Cambridge homes by area
| Area | Typical homes | What installers often find |
|---|---|---|
| Galt | 1800s stone and brick houses near the river and downtown, plus early 1900s homes | A masonry chimney shared with the water heater, low basement headroom, few ducts upstairs, some homes on radiators |
| Preston | Older houses near the historic core, post-war homes around it | Small return air, ducts added piecemeal, finished basements that box in the furnace |
| Hespeler | Mill-town houses near the old village core, newer streets toward its edges | Narrow side yards that limit where vent pipes and an outdoor unit can go |
| Newer east-side and south-end subdivisions | Two-storey homes built from the 1990s on | Plastic venting in place and ducts sized for central air: the simplest swaps |
General patterns, not rules: renovated older homes can be as simple as new ones.

Old chimneys, new furnaces
In many older Cambridge houses the furnace and the gas water heater share one masonry chimney. A new high-efficiency furnace vents through the side wall in plastic pipe instead, leaving the water heater alone in a flue sized for two appliances, where it can draft poorly and let condensation damage the masonry. The usual fix is a liner sized for the water heater, typically $300 to $1,500. In 1800s stone and brick chimneys, nobody knows the inside condition until someone looks.
The new vent and intake pipes need set clearances from windows, doors, air intakes and the gas meter, which on a narrow Galt or Hespeler lot can decide where the furnace sits. Condensing furnaces also need a drain; without a floor drain nearby, a condensate pump adds $150 to $350. A careful quote for an older house shows someone checked:
- The chimney, and whether the water heater needs a liner
- Where the new vent and intake can exit, given the clearances
- A floor drain within reach, or the need for a condensate pump
- Ducts to the upper floors, and whether they could carry central air
- Headroom and the route in for a new furnace and coil
Worked example: an older Galt house going high-efficiency
Take a Galt house where the old mid-efficiency furnace and the water heater share the chimney, there is no floor drain near the furnace, and the upper floor has weak return air.
- Single-stage furnace, 95 to 96% AFUE$4,000 to $6,500
- Chimney liner for the water heater$300 to $1,500
- Condensate pump$150 to $350
- Ductwork modifications$500 to $3,000+
- Municipal permit, where required$75 to $300
That adds up to a planning range of $5,025 to $11,650+ before HST, against $4,000 to $6,500 for the same furnace in a newer subdivision with none of the extras. If two quotes for this house are far apart, check whether one left out the liner or the duct work. Our furnace installation cost guide covers each extra.

Preston, Hespeler and the newer subdivisions
The older streets of Preston and Hespeler share Galt's chimney and duct issues on a smaller scale, and their post-war houses are mostly straightforward. On narrow lots, placing an outdoor air conditioner or heat pump unit clear of drifting snow and away from bedroom windows can take more planning than the furnace. Older houses with smaller electrical services are the most likely to need heat pump electrical work ($500 to $2,500) or a panel upgrade ($2,000 to $4,500).
The east-side and south-end subdivisions built from the 1990s on are the easiest homes in the city to quote: most already vent in plastic pipe, so a furnace swap stays close to the provincial range. With ducts sized for central air, they are the best local candidates for a ducted heat pump or dual fuel with a gas furnace as backup ($11,000 to $20,000). A central air conditioner on its own typically costs $3,800 to $7,000; see air conditioner prices.
Climate, sizing and running costs
Cambridge's winter design temperature is about -18°C, a touch milder on paper than Kitchener's. Size any new system from a CSA F280 heat loss calculation, and treat old stone walls as a reason to calculate carefully rather than oversize. Our furnace size calculator gives a rough first range.
Gas in Cambridge comes from Enbridge Gas. Electricity comes from GrandBridge Energy, formed in 2022 when Energy+ and Brantford Power merged. Start from our defaults of about $0.50 per cubic metre and $0.15 per kWh, then use your own all-in rates in the heating cost calculator to compare a furnace, a heat pump and dual fuel.
Permits and nearby towns
Permit requirements for HVAC work in Cambridge depend on the job, so confirm with the City of Cambridge's building division rather than relying on a general rule. The installer usually applies and adds the fee, typically $75 to $300. Gas work in Ontario must be done by a TSSA-registered contractor: ask for the registration number.
The same ranges apply in Ayr and the rest of North Dumfries, Puslinch, Paris and Branchton, with a possible travel charge for rural addresses. For the next cities over, see furnace prices in Kitchener and furnace prices in Guelph, or all city price pages.
Questions people ask
Why do older Cambridge homes often need a chimney liner with a new furnace?
A high-efficiency furnace vents through the wall in plastic pipe, so it stops using the chimney. The gas water heater left behind is too small for a flue built for two appliances, which can cause poor draft and condensation in the masonry. A liner sized for the water heater fixes that, typically for $300 to $1,500.
Who supplies gas and electricity in Cambridge?
Enbridge Gas delivers natural gas. Electricity comes from GrandBridge Energy, formed in 2022 from Energy+ and Brantford Power, which serves Cambridge, Brantford, Brant County and North Dumfries. Use the all-in prices from both bills when you compare running costs for a furnace and a heat pump.
Can a heat pump heat an old stone house in Galt?
It can, if the heat loss calculation supports it. Uninsulated stone walls lose heat quickly, so the system may need more capacity or backup heat than a newer home of the same size. A common approach is dual fuel, which keeps a gas furnace for the coldest hours, or ductless heads for upper floors with poor ducts.
Is a furnace replacement in Cambridge done in a day?
A straightforward swap in a newer home usually is. In an older Galt or Preston house, a chimney liner, a new vent route through stone or brick, or duct changes can add time. Ask each installer how long the heat will be off and whether any work needs a second visit, especially in winter.
Do the same prices apply in Ayr, Paris and Puslinch?
Yes, as a starting point, though rural addresses can carry a travel charge. Homes off the gas network that heat with propane or oil have different running-cost math and fall into a different heat pump rebate category from an Enbridge gas home. Pre-approval is required before installation for that rebate, and programs change.
